Woman gangraped inside moving car in Kolkata

Kolkata, May 30 : A woman was allegedly gang raped in a moving car by three youth early on Monday in the city’s posh satellite town Salt Lake, police said.

The culprits forced the woman, staying at Baguiati in northeast Kolkata, into the vehicle in the Sector V area of Salt Lake and sexually assaulted her.

The victim, who had come to the city some time back, wanted to go to a local restaurant, but reportedly got confused with the route and landed in the Sector V area.

She asked the youths about the correct direction when they arrived in the area in a car. They offered her a lift, and sped off the moment she boarded it. “She was raped in the running vehicle,” said a police officer.

A case under Section 376 G (gangrape) has been filed at the Electronic Complex police station under the Bidhannagar Commissionerate.

No one has been arrested so far.

The woman has been admitted in a state-run hospital.

Vijayawada, Aug 9 : At least 10 patients were killed and several others injured in a fire at a hotel functioning as a Covid care facility early on Sunday, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Alla Nani said.

The government has set up a committee to inquire into the incident, said the minister, who inspected the scene at the Swarna Palace hotel which had been converted into a paid Covid care centre by a private hospital here.

The inquiry committee has been tasked with submitting its findings to the government within 48 hours, he added.

Following a review meeting with local authorities and officials concerned, the minister said that the fire had broken out at 4.45 a.m., while the fire station received the first intimation at 5.09 a.m.

Panic-stricken inmates began screaming for help and a few staff members leapt off from the first floor, suffering injuries.

There were around 50 people in the building at the time of the mishap, of whom 31 were Covid-19 patients. The remaining inmates were medical staff and support personnel.

Ten Covid-19 patients, including two women at the centre, were killed in the blaze suspected to have been set off by a short circuit. The remaining Covid patients are reported to be safe and recovering.

Stating that initial investigations point to several violations, the minister said that a police case has been registered against the Ramesh Hospital’s management under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has expressed sorrow over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50 lakh to families of each victims.

Chandigarh, Aug 9 : A woman from Thailand was allegedly gang-raped in a hotel in Haryana’s Hisar town, police said on Sunday.

Two people, including the hotel’s owner, have been booked for the crime that was reported on Thursday night, and one accused has been arrested.

The woman, around 40 years old, had come to Delhi on March 3, and subsequently visited Hisar town, some 300 km from here, with friends. The woman complained that she was drunk when the hotel owner entered her room and raped her.

She said another person also tried to sexually assault her.

The victim, in her complaint to the police, said she was offered help by someone who took her to the police station.

The police said a case has been registered and accused Gulshan, who is the hotel’s owner, has been arrested.

Lucknow, Aug 9 : A dreaded shooter, said to be a close aide of mafia don turned politician Mukhtar Ansari, was gunned down along with an accomplice by a team of Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) on the outskirts of Lucknow on Sunday morning.

Officials said that shooter Rakesh Pandey aka Hanuman Pandey carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.

STF IG Amitabh Yash said Pandey was gunned down in retaliatory firing when the STF team tried to arrest him after he went to an area falling in Sarojini Nagar police station limits to meet one of his accomplices.

Police said Pandey was involved in a number of murders and shootouts carried out by the Ansari’s gang in the past 23 years. He was also accused of hatching a conspiracy to kill BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, who was shot dead in 2005.

Pandey was, however, acquitted after a trial in a subordinate court.

The police officer said Pandey had at least 10 criminal cases registered against him between 1993 and 2010. He said the criminal was untraceable for the last 10 years or so.

Police was continuously trying to track him down for the past many months, the IG said.
