The Group 2 in the World T20 Championship is witnessing a three-way stand-off now after India’s one-run victory over Bangladesh. There are three teams Pakistan, Australia and India with a realistic chance of making it to the semifinals of the tournament.
First up, it is Pakistan who will take on Australia on Friday (March 25). Without a doubt it’s a very important game for both teams. Pakistan lost against New Zealand on the same ground, two days ago. Australia are coming in straight after a hard-fought win against Bangladesh. And although Pakistan have the advantage of knowing the conditions a little better, they seem far from a confident side at the moment.
The fates of the other two in the group have been decided. New Zealand has won three matches and has already qualified for the semifinals. Bangladesh, which has lost three matches, has been eliminated.
Pakistan has lost both the matches it played — against India and New Zealand. However, it has a net run rate (+0.254) superior to India (-0.546), which has won two of its three matches. Australia has defeated Bangladesh and lost to group leaders New Zealand.
If Australia beats Pakistan on today, then it will be a virtual quarterfinal match between India and Australia. If Pakistan beats Australia, it will be a contest between India and Australia where the net run-rate will become a crucial factor.
