West Bengal: Tea trade unions three-day strike begins

Siliguri, Aug 7: The Tea trade unions three-day strike has begun in Terai and Dooars region of Siliguri on Tuesday.

The protest has been organised by the Joint Forum of 26 tea trade unions over implementation of minimum wages.

To revsolve the issues, the government had constituted a minimum wage advisory committee in 2015.

The forum had also anounced that tea would not be dispatched from gardens during the strike.

Yesterday, several representatives of the Joint Forum held a five-hour dharna at Uttarkanya follwoing the meeting over the minimum wage for the sector concluded.

Post meeting, labour commissioner Javed Akhtar told media the state was proposing a minimum daily wage of Rs 172. So far, a tea worker in Bengal earns Rs 159 in day.

However, those from the forum rejected it outright and placed another proposal of Rs 239 per day.
