Darjeeling, May 17, 2017: As counting began, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is leading in four out of seven municipal corporations where polls were held on May 14.
TMC won six out of the nine wards in Mirik municipality and emerged victorious in one ward in Darjeeling, a big gain for the party since its inception and a setback to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM).
In Pujali, the party has won 12 wards, followed by BJP in 2 wards and Congress in 1 ward. Bengal’s ruling party also got a majority in Raiganj winning 24 out of 27 wards, in Domkal winning 20 out of 21 wards and in Mirik getting 6 out of 9 wards.
The GJM won Darjeeling with 31 wards but the TMC managed to make inroads with one ward,18 out of 22 wards in Kalimpong and 17 out of 20 wards in Kurseong. The GJM, that holds control in Darjeeling and neighbouring areas, has been demanding a separate Gorkhaland state for several years.
