Bengaluru, June 16 : Parashuram Waghmare, the prime suspect arrested in connection with the murder of Karnataka journalist Gauri Lankesh has reportedly confessed to his crime and said that he killed the journalist to save ‘his religion’.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the sensational case revealed that Waghmore told that he was told in May 2017 that he had to kill someone to ‘save his religion’ and he agreed.
During interrogation, the alleged shooter of Gauri Lankesh, claimed he didn’t know who he was killing when he allegedly pumped four bullets into the journalist in Bengaluru.
Probe team said Wagmare was recruited to kill Gauri and he was trained to use an air pistol with 500 rounds in Belgaum for months before the murder. According to sources, the same weapon was used to shoot Lankesh, and rationalists Govind Pansare and M M Kalburgi as per the forensic reports.
The gun is yet to be traced and police suspect that the weapon is given to the shooter just before the act of crime and is taken back from him as soon as the murder was committed.
“The organised gang involved in the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh has a wide network spread across at least five states i.e. in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka and comprised at least 60 people but has refrained from giving any specific name to their underground organisation”, a senior police official said.
Gauri Lankesh, editor of Kannada weekly Lankesh Patrike, was shot dead in front of her house in Bengaluru’s RR Nagar on September 5, 2017.
