New Delhi, Feb 22, 2017: Scuffles broke out on Wednesday between two students groups All India Students’ Association (AISA) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Delhi University’s Ramjas College over JNU’s Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid being invited to speak at an event.
Over 20 students have reportedly been wounded in clashes with police personnel. However, some journalists were also caught in the clashes and beaten.
Amid sloganeering and fights, police were deployed to bring the situation under control but violent clashes and demonstrations did not stop.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ramjas College had canceled the two-day long event following protests by ABVP. The move did not go down well with AISA who began protesting against the college administration for giving in to ABVP’s demands, resulting in the clashes.
The duo had been invited to speak during the two-day seminar on the ‘culture of protests’, organized by English Department of College.
Umar Khalid was charged with sedition and jailed last year for his alleged role in an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University in which anti-India slogans were raised.
