New Delhi, July 18: M Venkaiah Naidu, who is considered as one of the most experienced leaders in the BJP, was chosen as party’s candidate for the post of vice-president.
He will contest against opposition candidate Mahatama Gandhi’s grandson, GopalKrishna Gandhi.
Naidu was born 1 July 1949 in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district. He completed schooling from V. R. High School in Nellore as well.
He holds bachelor’s degree in politics and diplomatic studies from V. R. College.
BJP’s veteran leader also holds a bachelor’s degree in law with specialisation in international law from Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam.
Naidu stepped into politics quite early in his life as he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1973, that time he was only 24.
He also served as swayamsevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Naidu was passionate about politics since college days, he also became the president of the student’s union of colleges affiliated to Andhra University.
He came into the limelight for his eminent role during the Jai Andhra Movement.
Naidu became the President of the youth wing of the Janata Party in Andhra Pradesh from 1977 to 1980. Later, he won the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections twice in 1978 and 1983 from Udayagiri constituency.
After the Bharatiya Janta Party BJP was formed in 1980, Naidu became Vice president of its youth wing. He also served as leader of the BJP Legislature Party in Andhra Pradesh, state general secretary and state unit chief.
Naidu served as the BJP General Secretary in 1993-2000.
He was the Rural Development Minister in the NDA government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Naidu held the post of BJP national president from July 2002 to October 2004. He quit the post after the party lost Lok Sabha elections of 2014.
The Veteran leader is a four-time Rajya Sabha member, thrice from Karnataka and once from Rajasthan.
Under PM Narendra Modi’s government, he served as Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Urban Development.
On July 17 this year, BJP declared him as its vice presidential candidate.
