Hyderabad, Oct 14, 2017: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentarian Varun Gandhi on Friday launched a scathing attack on Election Commission by calling it a “toothless tiger” that never derecognised any political party for not submitting poll expenditure details within the stipulated time.
“One of the biggest problems is the problem of the Election Commission which is really a toothless tiger. Article 324 of the Constitution says it controls and supervises elections. But does it really do that? It does not have the power to file cases once the elections are over. It has to go to the Supreme Court to do so,” Gandhi said.
He was delivering a guest lecture, ‘Political reforms in India’ at the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research.
Gandhi further added that though all political parties filed returns late, only the party belonging to late Speaker P.A. Sangma was derecognised.
He also demanded tighter enforcement of limits on donations to political parties would force candidates to engage with a broader spread of voters. He said state funding of elections would create a level playing field.
