Uttar Pradesh: Fatwa filed against Bollywood actor Jimmy Sheirgill

A fatwa was issued against Bollywood actor Jimmy Sheirgill on Wednesday, a report in Hindustan Times said.

Jimmy will be seen in a political drama ‘Shorgul’ which is loosely based on the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. The film has already been banned in several cities of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the report, the fatwa issued by Khamman Peer Baba Committee said that Jimmy has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community by enacting scenes that will cause unrest in the community through the dialogues and scene depictions. The fatwa has also banned Jimmy from shooting in Uttar Pradesh henceforth.

On Thursday, controversial BJP leader Sangeet Som had demanded a ban on the screening of Shorgul in Muzaffarnagar. Som has been under the scanner for his alleged role in the 2013 riots.

Shorgul, which features Jimmy Sheirgill and Ashutosh Rana in lead roles, is based on friendship between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl that snowballs into a political issue leading to unrest and chaos in society.

The movie was first scheduled to release on June 24, however was later postponed to July 1.

Alert was issued in Uttar Pradesh ahead to all the Superintendents of Police in the state for maintaining law and order situation ahead of the film’s release.
