UP Dalit teen who was brutally gang-raped dies: Eight years after Nirbhaya, India still no country for women

The crime in Hathras is a stark reminder of how little has changed since the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case that brought thousands of people to the streets and triggered a movement against sexual violence.

New Delhi: The life of another young woman has been brutally snuffed out, yet another victim of a vicious sexual assault.

A 19-year-old Dalit woman from a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district, some 200km from Delhi, died on Tuesday morning, nearly two weeks after she was gang-raped and brutalised by four men near her village.

The teenager suffered grievous injuries including multiple fractures on the spine. Her tongue was slashed.

After being in a critical condition in an ICU in an Aligarh hospital for several days, she was moved to Delhi’s AIIMS on Monday.

While the woman belonged to the Scheduled Castes (SC), the four suspects are from an upper caste. All four have been arrested and booked for attempt to murder and gang-rape.

Though the brutal crime is being seen as an atrocity against members of the SC community, it is also a stark reminder of how little has changed since the Nirbhaya gang-rape case nearly eight years ago that brought thousands of Indians to the streets and triggered a movement against sexual violence that caught the attention of the world.
