New Delhi, Sep 13: The Supreme Court has directed to allow the sale of uninsured vehicles to pay compensation to road accident victims.

While hearing a petition seeking proper compensation to road accident victims,  the Supreme Court has directed all the states to issue the necessary notification within 12 weeks to allow the sale of uninsured vehicles to pay compensation to road accident victims.

The apex court has ordered all states to amend Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) rules to make it mandatory to auction uninsured vehicles involved in an accident and deposit the proceeds to the victim. The SC has directed all the states to implement the rule within 12 weeks. Currently, this rule is applicable only in Delhi.

The MACT awards compensation after determining issues like the income of the deceased, the deduction to be made towards the personal living expenses of the deceased and the multiplier to be applied with reference to the age of the deceased.
