Unemployment rate, highest in 45 years, reaches to 6.1%


New Delhi, May 31: The union government on Friday confirmed that unemployment rate in the country is at a 45-year high.

The Union Ministry of Statistics data revealed India’s unemployment rate stood at 6.1 per cent.

The statistics ministry also stated female labour participation rate in urban areas for the quarter ending December 2018 was 19.5 per cent against 73.6 per cent for males.

The unemployment number comes as another set of data released on Friday showed that GDP growth rate of the country plunged to 5.8 per cent during the January-March quarter of the financial year 2018-19, from 7.7 per cent growth witnessed during the same quarter of the previous year.
