Typhoon Mangkhut : Deadly Storm Hits Hong Kong ,Macau casinos closed

Hong Kong , Sep 16 : Severe Typhoon Mangkhut battered Hong Kong with gusts of up to 160 miles an hour and threatened the southern coast of China on Sunday, after cutting a destructive path through the Philippines and killing 25 people.Trees were downed, windows shattered and hundreds of flights were canceled and much of the city’s public transport has been suspended.

Macau shut down all its casinos in a historic first as Typhoon Mangkhut approached on Sunday with authorities warning the gambling enclave would be hit by severe flooding.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) raised the storm signal to T10, closing shops and suspending transport as residents were warned to stay inside and well away from the water’s edge

Mangkhut is already the storm of 2018, and is currently packing sustained winds of 165 km, with gusts up to 205 km per hour.

On Saturday, it plowed into the Philippines, killing at least two people and flattening homes in small towns and villages on the northern island of Luzon.

The city’s airport, a central transit point for much of Asia, was virtually shut down, with 543 flights canceled, disrupting nearly 100,000 travelers. The outdoor sections of the city’s vaunted subway system were taken out of service.

Storm radar also showed the typhoon battering Guangdong Province in China. High-speed rail service was suspended in the province, and workers took precautionary measures at two nuclear plants along the coastline.

Guangdong, China’s most populous province had witnessed several typhoons in the past , therefore, evacuations from low-lying areas has been completed. Fishing vessels are ordered into well-protected anchorages.

The Pearl River Delta area, which also includes Hong Kong, is one of the world’s most important manufacturing hubs and home to more than 60 million people.
