Bhupinder Singh Hooda

Chandigarh, Oct 3 Two-time former Haryana Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda will file his nomination papers for the October 21 Assembly polls on Thursday.

The Congress released its first list of 84 candidates, fielding 16 of the 17 sitting Legislators, including four-term lawmaker Hooda from Garhi Sampla Kiloi Assembly constituency.

To challenge Hooda, the Congress’s chief ministerial face, in his stronghold, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Indian National Lok Dal’s (INLD) defected leader Satish Nandal against him. Nandal had joined the BJP on June 29.

The result of the 90-member Haryana Assembly will be declared on October 24.

Nandal had twice contested the Assembly elections against Hooda from the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi in Rohtak district on an INLD ticket in 2009 and 2014. He finished as Hooda’s nearest rival on both occasions.

The BJP’s vote share in the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi segment in the last Lok Sabha polls rose substantially compared to the previous elections.

Hooda’s son Deepender Singh Hooda, who was the three-time MP from Rohtak, faced a humiliating defeat in the last Lok Sabha polls.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda is facing cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for granting approval to a land deal of Rahul Gandhi’s brother-in-law Robert Vadra in the fag-end of his second stint as the Chief Minister.

In the 2014 Assembly polls, the BJP improved its 2009 tally of four to 47, followed by the INLD with 19 Legislators and the Congress with 15 seats.

Two seats went to the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC), and one each to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Five Independent candidates were also elected.

Bilkis Dadi Detension

Shaheen Bagh activist Bilkis ‘Dadi’ was detained and escorted from Delhi-Haryana’s Singhu border on Tuesday when she attempted to join hundreds of farmers protesting against the new farm bills.

“We are the daughters of farmers. We’ll go to support farmers’ protest today. We will raise our voice, the government should listen to us,” the elderly activist had said earlier in the day.

Bilkis ‘Dadi’ had made headlines last year when she along with other women residents of south Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh staged a sit-in against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bills which grew into a massive movement against the legislation seen as anti-Muslim.

At the peak of the protest in January this year, several Sikh farmers from unions in Punjab had turned up in Shaheen Bagh to lend support and set up a langar to provide hot meals to those on protest.

Members of more than 30 farmer unions have been camped at Delhi borders for six days now demanding a rollback of farm bills they allege will end the minimum support price (MSP) system and leave farmers at the mercy of corporates.

Small growers fear the new laws will make them vulnerable to competition from big business, and that they could eventually lose price supports for staples such as wheat and rice.

India’s vast farm sector contributes nearly 15% of the country’s $2.9 trillion economy and employs around half its 1.3 billion people.
