Two TDP Leaders Gunned Down by Maoists in Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam, Sep 23 : Maoists on Sunday shot dead a sitting MLA and a former MLA, both from the ruling TDP, in Araku area in Visakhapatnam district.Both Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former  MLA Siveri Soma were members of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). They were shot from point blank range.

“Around 20 members from CPI Maoist attacked them at around 12 pm, snatched the weapons from the PSOs, & later fired at them. Both died on the spot,”  Visakhapatnam DIG Srikanth said on TDP leaders Kidari Sarveswara Rao & Siveri Soma shot dead.

DIG Srikanth said that reason behind attack yet to be ascertained.

“We’re trying to ascertain facts from the PSOs. As per preliminary information, 20 Maoists were there with weapons & there may be some more in the neighbouring vicinity & they came along with the villagers,” he said.

A large number of Maoists allegedly participated in the attack.The incident occurred near Thutangi village, about 125 km from coastal city of Visakhapatnam.

K. Sarveswara Rao, belonging to Telugu Desam Party (TDP), was representing Araku constituency in the Andhra Pradesh state Assembly.The Maoists attacked Rao and former MLA Siveri Soma when they were attending a programme in Araku.

 

Rao was elected from Araku, a constituency reserved for the Scheduled Tribes, on YSR Congress Party ticket in the 2014 elections, defeating Soma of the TDP.

According to the police, both Rao and Soma had received threats from Maoists in the past.
