Two mild earthquakes jolt Himachal

Shimla, May 19, 2017: Two low-intensity earthquakes, epicentre in Chamba district adjoining Jammu and Kashmir on Friday jolted Himachal Pradesh in a span of nearly 2 hours.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, The first temblor measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale was recorded at 3.34 a.m., while the second measuring 4.5 was recorded at 5.32 a.m.

There were no immediate reports of loss life or damage to property. The Himalayan belt of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are known as earthquake-prone regions in the world.

9 killed in Rajasthan LPG cylinder blast

Jaipur, Feb 17: At least nine persons have been killed and 18 others injured after two LPG cylinders exploded at a wedding function in Beawar in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district, police said.

The incident took place on late Friday night. According to police, six persons were referred to a hospital in Ajmer while 12 were referred to the district hospital in Beawar.

Police said one Surendra Kumar Parecha had organised wedding celebrations at Kumavat Samaj Bhavan in Beawar for his son’s wedding.

The guests were staying in a double-storey building. Suddenly, there was a loud blast which brought the entire building down like a pack of cards.

According to some eyewitnesses, the cook was trying to refill the empty LPG cylinder from other cylinder. That caused a fire and it resulted in an explosion.

Post mortems are being done and the bodies are being handed over to their respective families. The groom’s mother is also missing.

The search for bodies is underway and once all bodies are found, police will begin an investigation into what led to the blast, an official said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has expressed condolences over the incident and called it tragic.

She wished a speedy recovery to the injured and prayed for peace to the departed souls.

Criminals torch three buses in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Feb 16: Unidentified criminals torched three buses after being refused extortion money in Jharkhand’s Chatra district, police said on Friday.

According to police, three buses of a company were standing at a bypass road in Chatra district when criminals poured kerosene on them and set them on fire early on Friday. All the three buses were gutted.

Police recovered a pamphlet from the torched bus site, with the ‘Tiger Group’ claiming responsibility for the incident.

The pamphlet says that denial of extortion is the reason for the incident.

The owner of the bus claimed that he has suffered Rs 1 crore loss. The buses were new and were plying from Ranchi to Sasaram in Bihar, via Chatra.

In the past Maoist guerrillas used to torch vehicles after being denied levy.

This is the first time that a criminal group has claimed responsibility for such an incident.
