NewDelhi, Feb 28: On 54th death anniversary of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of Indian Republic, Wefornews pays a heartfelt tribute to the great son of the Land.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was born on December 3, 1884, into a big joint family in Ziradei village of Siwan district near Chhapra of Bihar. Although he was a lawyer by profession, he turned out to be a powerful leader during the Indian freedom struggle as he dedicated himself to the cause of the country.
He joined the freedom movement with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
Later on, he took up the responsibility of designing the constitution of the nation by heading up the Constituent Assembly. Dr. Prasad presided over the Constituent Assembly from 1946 till 1949 and helped frame the Constitution of India. He was elected to be the first President of the country on January 26, 1950.
He was awarded the nation’s highest civilian award the “Bharat Ratna” in 1962.
On February 28, 1963, Dr. Prasad passed away after suffering from brief illness for around six months.
