TMC delegation detained over NRC: Derek says ‘Super Emergency’ by Modi government

Assam, Aug 2 :Trinamool Congress MP Derek O Brien accused the Narendra Modi government of imposing “super emergency” in the country after TMC  delegation, including a women MLA, was detained at Silchar Airport by Assam police on Thursday against attending a public convention on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) final draft.

“Our delegation was detained at Silchar airport. It is our democratic right to meet people, this is a super emergency like situation, ” Derek O Brien,TMC MP said.

As soon as they  landed at the airport, the Assam Police on Thursday detained the Trinamool Congress delegation at the Silchar airport to stop them from entering the state over the controversial Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue.

The members were supposed to attend a public convention around 3:30 pm .

The detained six TMC MPs and two party MLAs were planning a campaign against the NRC draft that does not include names of over 40 lakh people in the state.

The delegation includes Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De Nag, Nadimul Haque, Arpita Ghosh and Mamata Thakur .

It was led by West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim.
