Thousands of Aadhaar cards found dumped in Maharashtra well

Mumbai, March 14: A group of youths found thousands of original Aadhaar cards dumped in a well when they while cleaning it on Sunday.

The cards were packed in nylon gunny packets and weighed down with rocks.

Maharashtra’s Yavatmal has been witnessing a shortage of drinking water.

After protests from women in the region, the district administration had banned the use of water at construction sites and ordered the municipal authorities to get hold of wells and clean them, the Times of India reported.

Following this, a complaint has been filed with the district collector who has ordered a probe to look for where the cards came from. “We will not spare anyone found guilty of dereliction of duties,”  ToI quoted the district collector as saying.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended March 31 deadline for Aadhaar linkages till the judgement is pronounced.
