Thoothukudi Protest: CBI registers case against Tamil Nadu Police, Revenue Department officials

Chennai, Nov 29: The Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) on Thursday registered a case against the Tamil Nadu Police and  Revenue Department officials over death of protestors in Police firing during Anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi.

On May 22 this year, police fired at people protesting against the Sterlite Copper smelter plant in which at least 13 persons lost thier lives and over 60 were injured.

The people claimed that it was polluting groundwater, and was hazardous for the environment.

Taking the cognizance of people’s demand, the Tamil Nadu government on May 28 ordered the closure of the plant.
