Thoothukudi Protest: Advocate arrested from Chennai Airport


New Delhi, June 21: An advocate was arrested on Wednesday night at the Chennai airport in connection with the protests against Vedanta’s Sterlite industrial plant in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), Tamil Nadu.

“An advocate named Vanchi Nathan was arrested in last night from Chennai Airport in connection with #Thoothukudi violence, he is also an activist”, ANI reported.

Hundreds of protesters went on a rampage demanding the closure of a Sterlite’s industrial plant in the city on May 21, citing that the pollution it generates is causing serious health issues.

To control the situation police resorted to firing and lathi-charge which claimed 13 lives and left dozens of dozens wounded.

The agitation against the plant, which represents the copper unit of Vedanta Limited, escalated after the firm announced the expansion of its unit in the city.

Sterlite Copper, which presently operates a 400,000-tonne per annum, maintains it has received necessary permits and has not violated any guidelines.
