New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Pakistani journalist Meher Tarar spent three nights together in Dubai, the prosecution told a Delhi court on Saturday citing the statement of Sunanda Pushkar’s journalist friend.

Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava read out the statement of journalist Nalini Singh, who was the friend of the deceased. The statement said: “I knew Sunanda for 3-4 years. For last one year she started sharing about her personal life. She shared her relationship with Tharoor and told me that Tharoor and Tarar spent three nights together.

“I got a call from her phone a day before her death, she was weeping that Tharoor and Tarar shared romantic messages. The message read that Tharoor would divorce Sunanda after the general elections. His family was also supportive of this decision,” the statement said.

Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar is currently hearing arguments in the case related to the death of Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar.

Srivastava also cited the Tarun Tejpal judgment by the Supreme Court saying, “even mental torture may amount to cruelty.”

“This was the third marriage of both the parties. The mental torture has led her to commit suicide,” he said.

Sunanda’s son Shiv Menon who was also examined in the case had said “My mother was a strong lady, she cannot commit suicide”.

The prosecutor also read out the statement of Sunanda’s brother Ashish, who had stated, “Sunanda was my elder sister. She was happy in her marriage. She was tensed because of the recent dispute. She could never commit suicide.”

Narayan Singh, the domestic help of Tharoor, had said, “I work at Shashi Tharoor’s house. Sir and madam had a fight. Madam (Sunanda) was with her friend Sanjay. After coming back from Trivandrum they both had a fight. Even in Dubai, they both fought over a girl named Catie. They both fought till 4 a.m. in the morning. Sunanda was on call till 5.30 a.m.”

Arguments in the death case of Sunanda Pushwar are underway in the Delhi court.

Rahul Gandhi returning to lead Congress again?

scindia rahul gandhi priyanka gandhi

New Delhi/Wayanad (Kerala), Dec 6 : Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi is all set to return to lead the party and is likely to take over after the Delhi assembly polls early next year. A hint to this effect was dropped by Congress General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal who said that country wants his leadership more now.

Venugopal, who is accompanying Gandhi to his Kerala constituency Wayanad, told reporters: “The nation is going through a critical phase… The party needs his leadership and there is loud chorus from the workers to bring him again and we hope he will listen to them.”

A Congress session is scheduled in the next few months to ratify the appointment of interim President Sonia Gandhi. A source said that in the same meet, a chorus will grow to bring again Rahul Gandhi as planned by young leaders in the party.

Rahul Gandhi’s elevation to the party organisation was first demanded at the AICC’s Hyderabad session in 2006 where workers from UP raised slogans in his favour and he was made party General Secretary in 2007. After that, the demand to make him Vice President was raised at the brainstorming session in Jaipur in 2013.

He was elected President unopposed in 2017 after demand from different quarters of the party, but during the 2019 General Elections, the party was routed under his leadership and he resigned in May taking the responsibility of poll debacle and did not budge to the party’s repeated requests to reconsider. In August, Sonia Gandhi was appointed interim party chief.

Though he may not be the party chief, but Rahul Gandhi’s decisions are evident within the party’s decisions as evinced by appointment of Nitin Raut as minister in the Shiv Sena-Congress-Nationalist Congress Party coalition government in Maharashtra and of Nana Patole as the Assembly Speaker.

The party is finalising a venue for the AICC session, which could be held in the Congress-ruled states of Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan in January and February, a source said.

Centre supplying inadequate, rotten onions, alleges Mamata

Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, Dec 6 : With the price of onions touching Rs 150 a kilo in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday put the onus on the centre accusing it of supplying inadequate and rotten stock of the vegetable and asked her party workers to hit the street on the issue.

“Price rise is a matter that depends on the Central government. A few months back, the Centre asked us to specify the quantity or onion we need. We asked for 200 metric tonnes,” Banerjee said a programme here.

The Centre, however, gave the state only 20 tonnes, she said.

“Out of that, ten tonnes were rotten,” she said at the Solidarity Day programme to commemorate the death anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar.

The Chief Minister said before her Trinamool Congress came to power in 2011, onions were not grown in the state.

“No initiatives were taken to grow onions in the state. But now we are now cultivating onions in some parts of the state,” she said.

“I ask Trinamool Congress workers to hit the streets against the spiralling onion prices,” she said.
