Supreme Court quashes Centre’s order, reinstates Alok Verma as CBI Director

New Delhi, Jan 8: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated Alok Verma as the CBI Director after setting aside the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) October 23 order.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K.M. Joseph “the government should have referred to the Select Committee consisting of the Chief Justice of India, Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition to initiate Alok Verma’s removal”.

“The High Power Committee under DSPE Act to act within a week to consider his case”, the Court stated.

Pronouncing the verdict on behalf of Chief Justice Gogoi, Justice Kaul stated that the selection committee will meet within seven days from Tuesday and till then Verma will resist from taking any important policy decisions.

The Top Court pronounced the judgement on a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation Director and NGO Common Cause against theNarendra Modi government’s decision on the intervening night of October 23-24 to divest Verma of his charge as head of the probing agency.
