Amritsar, April 29: Actor-turned-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sunny Deol filed his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha 2019 polls from Punjab’s Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency on Monday.

Sunny Deol was accompanied by brother and actor Bobby Deol.

Earlier in the day, Sunny offered prayers at the Golden Temple ahead of filing his nomination papers.

Sporting a blue turban and a blue shirt, Deol, who himself is a Sikh, entered the shrine complex with folded hands, accompanied by his supporters. He offered prayers at the ‘Harmandir Sahib’, the sanctum sanctorum.

Sunny Deol faces tough competition from Congress candidate and sitting MP Sunil Jakhar, who is the Punjab Congress president.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met Sunny Deol and posted a photo of the meeting along with a message on Twitter stating that he was impressed with the actor’s passion for a better India. Happy to have met him today. We are all rooting for his victory in Gurdaspur! ‘We both agree – Hindustan zindabad tha, hai, aur rahega.”

Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency was earlier represented by actor Vinod Khanna who won from here four times – 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014 – on a BJP ticket.

Khanna died in April 2017 while he was still the sitting MP.

Following his death, the BJP chose Swarn Singh Salariya, a Mumbai-based millionaire businessman,as the party candidate for the October 2017 by-election, over Kavita Khanna, the widow of Vinod Khanna.

Salariya lost to Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar by over 1.93 lakh votes.

Sunny Deol has starred in blockbuster movies like “Border”, “Betaab”, “Gadar – Ek Prem Katha”, “Ghayal” and many others.

Patna, Sep 19 — All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday claimed that wrong policies led to the failure of the Congress and RJD governments in Bihar.

Owaisi was in Patna as the AIMIM entered into an alliance with the Samajwadi Janata Dal Democratic (SJDD) ahead of the Bihar polls.

“We will fight the election under the leadership of Devendra Prasad Yadav, the president of SJDD. We welcome all those parties who want to fight against communalism and communal parties,” the AIMIM chief said.

“We are not scared of any political party. Our party had contested the election in 2015 from Kishanganj, but the Congress won. Today the BJP is riding high in Bihar due to the failure of the RJD. I have defeated the BJP and the Shiv Sena in Hyderabad,” Owaisi said.

“In Maharashtra, the Congress party is sitting on the Shiv Sena’s lap. The former is presented as a secular party in the country but I would believe that its thinking promotes feudalism. People of the country are facing the consequences due to the wrong moves of the Congress party,” the AIMIM chief said.

The AIMIM has already declared it will contest on 50 seats in the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar.
