PM Modi’s flagship scheme Jan Dhan Yojna have come under a scanner after Indian Express on Tuesday reported that banks are deliberately converting zero rupee accounts into one rupee accounts to reduce tally of inactive Jan Dhan 0 balance accounts.
The RTIs accessed by the Express further proved that, the top 12 banks with the most number of Jan Dhan accounts have about 36 per cent accounts with less than Rs 10 balance. More than 20 bank managers have said that there has been an immense pressure to reduce the zero balance accounts and “one-rupee” deposit was circled as a solution.
Earlier it was also reported that as much as 25 % account holders are repeat customers who already have a bank account.
Reacting to the exposure, Congress has lashed out the Modi government for “fooling the nation” through “sly games, lies, deceit and trickery”.
“Manipulating figures, fudging data and falsifying so- called achievements have become the functioning style of Modi government. Lies, deceit and trickery are the distinctive features through which the Modi government operates,” said congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala.
He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “fooling the nation” through “prevarication” like “fudging” of GDP data, exaggerating figures on LPG connections, electrification of villages and the deletion of fake ration cards.
On the day of inauguration 1.5 Crore (15 million) bank accounts were opened under the Jan Dhan scheme and PM also made a Guinness world record for opening maximum bank accounts in a single day. By June 2006, over 22 crore bank accounts were opened under the scheme, marking a grand success of the plan with Rs 384.11 billion as deposits.
But the report from Indian express has put a question on the stats of “success” regarding the Jan Dhan yojana.
