Chennai, May 31 : Members of several students organisations on Tuesday staged protest outside the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) against the attack on a PhD student inside the campus for participating in a beef festival.
Student Unions, such as the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students Federation of India (SFI), united outside IIT-M and raised slogans condemning the attack on R. Sooraj.
They also shouted slogans against the Modi-led central government. Later , the city police detained the protesters.
Meanwhile , members of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam held a beef eating protest outside the campus.

Earlier, on Wednesday cops said they have filed a case against eight persons over the attack on Sooraj. However, no arrests have been made yet .
Sooraj was allegedly attacked on Tuesday afternoon by a group of students for participating in the beef festival organised by another group of students, who were protesting against the central government’s new regulation of cattle slaughter on Sunday in the premises of IIT-Madras.
