Several incidents where statues of prominent political thinkers including those of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, BR Ambedkar were defaced or vandalised have been reported across the country despite central government’s warning.
The Home Ministry on March 6 issued advisories to states asking them to take all necessary precautions to prevent such incidents.
“Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with and booked under relevant provisions of law,” an official statement had said.
Statue vandalism has picked up in the last couple of months after a statue of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, was bulldozed by a mob in Tripura following the Assembly election results.
