Complaint against singer Papon for inappropriately kissing minor on reality show

New Delhi, Feb 23: A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a complaint against Assamese singer, Angarag Papon Mahanta, popularly known as Papon, with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR, under the POCSO act), for ‘inappropriately kissing’ the minor girl, reports Outlook.

In a video shared on Papon’s official Facebook page, the 41-year-old singer is seen celebrating Holi with few of the contestants of ‘The Voice of India Kids Season 2’, a singing reality show of which he is a jury member.  He is seen applying colours to a contestant and planting a kiss, apparently, on her mouth.

The video still features on the singer’s official page

The video soon garnered controversy over allegations of molestation. Lawyer Runa Bhuyan, in her complaint to the NCPCR, alleged the video has “objectionable content violating bodily integrity amounting into sexual assault on a minor girl.”

As stated in the Outlook report, Lawyer, Runa Bhuyan, said in the complaint, “I am shocked to see the behaviour of the said singer Angarag Papon Mahanta towards a minor girl where he is seen to be applying colors on a minor girl and inappropriately kissing the said girl. On seeing the video, I am seriously concerned regarding the safety and security of minor girl participating in reality shows across India,”.

After the complaint under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was filed, TV reports claim that Papon’s lawyer came out in his defense and argued that the video is misleading. He added that the girl’s father has also issued a statement requesting media channels to not “drag the issue.”

He also mentioned that It’s important for people to understand is that the video has been put in public domain by my client (Papon).

If he had any objection, intention or any sort of feeling then he would not be putting out something against him

Papon too cleared his stand and said,” We’ve always focused on safety, security & well-being of contestants participating in our shows. We’ve always adhered to NCPCR & Essel Vision Productions Ltd has taken all precautionary measures under NCPCR& other laws.

”We believe in nurturing talent with utmost sensitivity while we provide them platform to showcase their aptitude. We’re extending complete support to all parties who are impacted by this incident & stand by them to help them through this situation”, Papon added

However, the complainant Bhayan argues that the girl is clearly seen as uncomfortable as Papon kisses her in the video.
Papon is currently one of the judges on Voice India Kids along with singers Shaan and Himmesh Reshammiya.

Papon has lent his voice for songs in commercial Bollywood movies like Sultan, Barfi, Dum Lagake Haisha, Bajrangi Bhaijan, among others, and enjoys a considerable fan following.
