Special Police Officer posted at MLA’s residence flees with 8 rifles

Srinagar, Sep 29 : A high alert has been sounded in Jammu and Kashmir after a special police officer deployed on the guard duty of a People’s Democratic Party MLA Aijaz Ahmad Mir has fled  with eight AK-47 rifles including the licensed pistol of the legislator from his official residence in Srinagar on Friday.

The deserter SPO, Adil Bashir, is believed to have joined terror outfit.Now police is suspecting a major conspiracy behind this  incident  and therefore a reward of Rs. 2 lakh has also been announced for information on the special police officer.

According to police sources, the police guards deployed at the official residence of Peoples Democratic Party legislator Aijaz Ahmad Mir reported that their service weapons are missing and SPO Adit Bashir has gone missing with seven rifles and a pistol.

The legislator’s residence at Jawahar Nagar in Srinagar, where most legislators and government officials live and  is considered to be one of the high security zones in Srinagar.

 

“We have launched an investigation. It is not a simple case of an SPO decamping with weapons. We don’t rule out involvement of some other policemen. We are taking them into custody for questioning,” said Imtiyaz Ismael Parray, Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar.

He said they are investigating if the special police officer ran away with the rifles today or if he has been missing for the last few days.

This incident comes after three special police officers of Jammu and Kashmir  were killed by suspected Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists in Shopian district on September 21.

An FIR was lodged in police station Rajbagh and the investigation was taken up, the spokesman said, adding that Rs 2 lakh has been announced as reward for anyone capturing the SPO with weapons

The terrorists have allegedly warned the policemen and asked them to resign, say police sources.
