New Delhi, May 22: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party president Rahul Gandhi will attend the oath-taking ceremony of JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy as the new chief minister of Karnataka on May 23.
Kumaraswamy, who was in Delhi on Monday, met Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi at the Congress chief’s Tughlak Road residence to personally invite them to the swearing ceremony, which is scheduled to be held in Bengaluru.
Several Opposition leaders including Mayawati, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav have been also invited by Kumaraswamy to grace the event.
“There is no bargain. We will cordially work out things. We must work together. I am here to take their (Congress leaders) advice,” Kumaraswamy told media after the 20-minute meeting.
“I wanted to show my respect and regards to Gandhi family. That’s why I came here. I requested them further presence in oath taking ceremony. Both of them agreed to be present at the oath taking ceremony,” JD(S) leader added.
On being asked about the appointment of deputy CM, he said: “Rahul ji cleared the modalities to be done, he has given permission to Karnataka general secretary KC Venugopal to discuss all those matters and finalise everything. Local leaders and he will sit together tomorrow to finalise things.”
Kumaraswamy staked claim to the government in the southern state soon after BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa announced his resignation in the Assembly on Saturday. He called Governor Vajubhai Vala on Saturday evening who invited the coalition to form the government.
After the swearing-in ceremony, Kumaraswamy is likely to convene the assembly on May 24.
