Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Union minister Nitin Gadkari are scheduled to visit Srinagar today to offer condolences to the family of late chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.

Sonia Gandhi will visit Srinagar in the afternoon to offer her condolences to Mehbooba Mufti, a statement issued by the Congress said.

“Sonia Gandhi will fly back to New Delhi today (Sunday) itself. She will visit Gupkar Road residence of the late chief minister in the afternoon,” a Congress party functionary said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Mr Gadkari will also call on Mehbooba Mufti today.

“Gadkariji will also meet state party leaders to discuss the formation of new government in the state,” BJP state spokesperson Khalid Jahangir told

The fourth day congregational prayers for Mr Sayeed will be offered today at 11 a.m. at the grave of the deceased in Dara Shikoh Park in Bijbehara town of Anantnag district.

At 1:30 p.m. another congregational prayer meeting will be held at the Gupkar Road residence of the Muftis in Srinagar.

After battling for his life for 14 days, Mr Sayeed died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on January 7.

Following refusal of Mehbooba Mufti to be sworn in as the new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir during the mourning period, Governor’s Rule was imposed in the state.

“After reaching concurrence from the president of India, Governor N.N. Vohra issued a notification today to impose Governor’s Rule in the state,” a Raj Bhavan spokesman said yesterday.

The Governor’s Rule has been imposed retrospectively with effect from January 8.

Last time the state was brought under the Governor’s Rule was on December 23, 2014, after the state assembly election results threw up a hung verdict.

Akhilesh questions ‘intention’ behind deferring farm laws

Akhilesh Yadav Sad

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has questioned the ‘intentions’ of the Modi government to defer farm laws by one and a half year.

“The BJP government has extended a proposal to defer the implementation of the farm laws for the next one and a half year. The move is illogical and without any rationale. Deferring implementation of the law will not change the consequences that will follow once the law is introduced,” he said.

Akhilesh further said, “By deferring implementation of the law, the BJP government is trying to counter popular public sentiment which is growing in favour of the agitating farmers and against the law makers. The government will eventually implement the laws before the elections in 2024 to benefit the capitalists.”

The SP president has directed the party leaders and workers to dedicate their Republic Day celebrations to farmers who are protesting against the new farm laws. He asked party men to reach the venues where Indian flag will be unfurled at the tehsil level on tractors carrying the Tricolour.

He said that by taking out tractor rallies, the SP workers and leaders will only reassert their support to the agitating farmers.

Akhilesh also attacked the ruling BJP for the delay in clearing cane dues of farmers, increase in power tariff and raids by power department officials on farmers for recovery of power dues.
