Somnath Chatterjee, Former Lok Sabha Speaker, Dies At 89

Kolkata, Aug 13 : Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee died here on Monday at a private clinic following a cardiac arrest and prolonged illness, nursing home sources said. He was 89.

Doctors said he was undergoing dialysis.”He died at 8.15 a.m.,” Bellevue Clinic CEO Pradip Tondon told .

Chatterjee was critical following the heart attack he suffered on Sunday. He was also suffering from a kidney-related ailment and was admitted to the clinic in a critical condition on August 7.

He is survived by his wife and two daughter.

Chatterjee was the key leader of the CPM, which he had joined in 1968. A 10-time member of the Lok Sabha, he became the Speaker from in 2004 when the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh came to power.


Last month, the former Speaker had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. After his condition improved, he was discharged from the hospital. But three days later, on Tuesday, he had to be hospitalised again.
