Amid speculation that the Maharashtra government will recommend actor Urmila Matondkar’s name for her nomination to the state Legislative Council, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Friday said Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has been authorized to take a decision on it.

His statement comes a day after the Maharashtra cabinet discussed the proposal of recommending to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari the names of 12 candidates for their nomination to the Upper House of the state legislature from his quota.

Replying to a query on the actor’s name doing rounds, Raut told reporters, “I have also heard about the speculation that Matondkar will be nominated by the government to the council. It is the prerogative of the state cabinet, which has authorized CM Uddhav Thackeray to take a decision.”

When asked about the secrecy being maintained about the list of 12 nominees, state parliamentary affairs minister Anil Parab said, “There is no secrecy. Leaders of the three MVA allies will finalize the names and submit the list to the chief minister, who will forward it to the governor.”

The 12 council seats had fallen vacant in June this year.

Under Article 171 of the Constitution, the governor can nominate 12 members with special knowledge or practical experience in the field of literature, art, science, cooperative movement, and social service to the state Legislative Council.

Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress will field four members each.

Apart from Urmila Matondkar, the names of Marathi actor and Shiv Sena leader Aadesh Bandekar, singer Anand Shinde, BJP-turned-NCP leader Eknath Khadse, farmer leader Raju Shetti are also doing rounds.

Matondkar had unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Mumbai North constituency on a Congress ticket. However, she had later quit the party over the style of functioning in the Mumbai Congress.

Recently, she was in the news for slamming actor Kangana Ranaut over her remarks in which she had likened Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Hindi Film Industry’s Heart & Soul In Mumbai, Says Association After Proposed Move To UP

Yogi Adityanath had recently unveiled an ambitious plan to set up the film city in Noida and rolled out an open offer to film fraternity to come to Uttar Pradesh.

Film City Mumbai

The Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) on Friday wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, stressing that the film industry will continue to stay in the city.

The letter comes days after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath proposed an alternate film city in UP.

Adityanath had recently unveiled an ambitious plan to set up the film city in Noida and rolled out an open offer to film fraternity to come to Uttar Pradesh.

Ahead of his Mumbai visit recently, ruling Congress in Maharashtra had alleged a conspiracy to snatch away the film city to UP, and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had vowed not to allow anybody to “forcibly” take away businesses.

In a letter addressed to Thackeray, IMPPA said they were “happy to note” that the Chief Minister had “vocally and clearly stated that Maharashtra is the birth place of the film industry.”

“Mumbai is the heart of the Hindi film industry and nobody can take it anywhere because the industry consists of its people, which are producers, directors, artistes and other technicians are the ones who form the core of the industry.

“We can assure you that our members will definitely not lose out on opportunities made available to them by other states and countries but they will never shift their base,” the IMPPA said in the letter.

The film body further asserted that Mumbai is the “heart and soul” of the industry.

“It is noteworthy that Mumbai produces majority of films in Hindi language which is the one language in the country which has kept Indians all over the world connected to each other due to the entertainment and drama provided to them by Hindi films which are the main source of saluting our culture and social fabric and keeping national integrity alive and intact.

“In the present economic scenario as the lockdown pandemic continues to wreak havoc, the birthplace of Hindi cinema is gradually becoming the graveyard and we have repeatedly pleaded that necessary steps need to be taken to save the Hindi film industry,” IMPPA added.

It said that the Maharashtra government has a responsibility to ensure the film industry’s survival.

“The Hindi film industry is also a business which needs to be nurtured and looked after and hence all benefits available to other industries have to be made available to films and entertainment industry if they are going to be a sustainable and viable proposition,” the letter added.

Kangana Ranaut

Mumbai: Actress Kangana Ranaut on Friday reacted to legal notices piling up against her.

“Film mafia filed many cases on me, last night Javed Akhtar filed one more, Maharashtra government filing one case every hour now congress in Punjab is also joined the gang…. Lagta hai mujhe mahan banake he dum lenge (I think they will take a break only after making me great.) Thank you,” Kangana Ranaut tweeted from her verified account on Friday reacting to a news piece talking about the legal notice.

Earlier on Friday, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee sent a legal notice to Kangana, seeking an “unconditional apology” for her “derogatory” tweets against farmers and activists involved in the farmers protest against the Centre’s three Farm Laws, the committee’s president.

“We have sent a legal notice to Kangana Ranaut for her derogatory tweet calling the aged mother of a farmer as a woman available for Rs 100. Her tweets portray farmers protest as anti-national. We demand an unconditional apology from her for her insensitive remarks on farmers protest,” Manjinder Singh Sirsa, President of DSGMC tweeted.

The notice comes in the wake of a tweet from the actress alleging that the ‘Shaheen Bagh dadi’ also joined the farmers’ agitation over the new agri laws at various border points of the National Capital Region.

She had retweeted the post with pictures of two elderly women, including Bilkis Bano, and wrote that the “same Dadi” who featured in Time Magazine was “available in 100 rupees”.

On Thursday a petition had been filed in Bombay High Court against Kangana. The petitioner seeks the suspension of the verified Twitter account of the actress for allegedly spreading hatred and disharmony.
