Scientist, wife held with Drugs worth Rs 231 crore


NEW DELHI, 4 Oct: In a major Drug bust, the Narcotics Control Bureau have arrested a Bengaluru research scientist and two others who were involved in smuggling of drugs in Hyderabad.

Atleast 231kg of amphetamine having the international value of Rs 231 crore also seized from them.

According to the investigation of NCB officials, a major inter-state drug network is running in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Venkat Rama Rao (37), a research scientist who was employed at a reputed firm, was arrested on September 30 in Hyderabad when he went to collect the drug from an associate identified as Ravi Shankar Rao (22).

Nearly 221kg of amphetamine was seized from their possession. During questioning, Venkat disclosed that he had more drugs at home.

When the NCB reached his home in Bengaluru, his wife Preethi (35) was hiding 30g of amphetamine, which they suspect was used as a sample for buyers, and Rs 1.23 crore in cash. She has been taken into custody.

Later, the NCB recovered 10kg more from a laboratory where the drug is said to have been processed. NCB sources informed that said more persons might be involved in the ring.

According to NCB, many Indian youngsters are getting trapped in the vicious circle of addiction. Drugs such as amphetamine and ecstasy are smuggled on large scale to Southeast Asian and African countries from India.
