SC stays order to demolish car parking lot near Taj Mahal


New Delhi, Oct 27: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed its order directing demolition of  an ‘illegal’ parking multi-level car parking being constructed near the Taj Mahal at Agra.

The top court asked the authorities to maintain status quo at the site, which is around one kilometre from the eastern gate of and stated no further construction work will be conducted there.

A bench comprising Justices MB Lokur and Dipak Gupta asked additional solicitor general Tushar Mehta, representing the Uttar Pradesh government to file a comprehensive policy on preservation and pollution in the Taj Trapezium Zone and nearby areas.

Responding to this Mehta stated the government was committed to protecting the Taj Mahal and he will file a comprehensive policy before the court.

The Taj Trapezium Zone is an area of 10,400 square kilometre around the symbol of love ‘Taj Mahal’ and is aimed at protecting the historical monument.

On October 24, the apex court had ordered the demolition of the under-construction multi-level car parking.

Following this the state government had appealed in the Supreme Court seeking modification or recalling its the earlier order.
