New Delhi, May 9: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the petition seeking to direct the Election Commission of India (ECI) to debar Congress President Rahul Gandhi from contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said “We dismiss the petition. There is no merit in the petition”.

The court was hearing the petition moved by two activists seeking direction to the Home Ministry to decide on the matter and it also sought the disqualification of Gandhi from contesting the general elections.

The Home Ministry issued a notice to the Congress Chief on April 29 to clarify his nationality within a fortnight after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy alleged that he was a British national.
