Ruchika Girhotra Case: SC upholds ex-Haryana DGP’s Conviction

Delhi, 23 Sept: The Supreme Court on Friday convicted ex- Haryana DGP SPS Rathore of molesting teenager Ruchika Girhotra who committed suicide in 1993 after alleged Police harassment.

The ex-cop will be a free man but with the stain of conviction. The court confirmed his conviction but said he will not have to spend any more time in jail.

“We respect the verdict. I would have been more satisfied if he had served the entire 18 month jail term. Six months in jail was not enough for the despicable crime,” said Madhu Prakash, a family friend.

On 20 August in 1990, Ruchika Girhotra, a 14-year-old budding tennis player was molested by Rathore. He was then the IGP with Haryana Police and president of the Haryana Lawn Tennis Association (HLTA).

When the victim filed the case, she was expelled from her school for “indiscipline.” Her family was also reportedly harassed on the behest of Rathore.

After three years of the incident in 1993, Girhotra consumed poison and committed suicide.

The former police officer was convicted in 2010 and was sent to jail for six months, which was extended to 18 months by the High Court.
