Rs 16,999 Xiaomi Mi Max 2 with 5,300mAh battery now in India

New Delhi, July 18 : Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi on Tuesday launched in India its Mi Max 2 device that sports a 6.44-inch screen and is powered by a massive 5,300mAh battery.

Xiaomi claims that Mi Max 2 has 31 days of standby time and 57 hours of talktime. It comes with Quick Charge 3.0 technology with parallel charging and gives a day’s power in just one hour of charging.

Unveiled in China in May, Mi Max 2 is the successor to Mi Max phablet that came to India last June.

Priced at Rs 16,999, the device will be available from July 27 from 10 a.m. on flipkart, Amazon, TATA CliQ and Mi.com.

The device, available in matte black, has a full metal unibody design and sports a fingerprint sensor on the back. It has rounded edges for a better feel.

The 7.6 mm Mi Max 2 has a 12MP camera on the top left with a dual LED flash. The camera boasts large pixels for clearer photos with better contrasts as compared to its predecessor.

Mi Max 2 has 5MP selfie-shooter. It is powered by Octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC clocked at 2GHz blended with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.

The device runs on Android Nougat 7.1.1 operating system and supports the split-screen feature.

The Android device comes modified with Xiaomi’s own custom user interface called MIUI and the company has added a new theme this year. Xiaomi promised to update to MIUI 9 soon.

Xiaomi, that clocked over $1 billion in revenue in India last year, shipped 23.16 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2017, a whopping increase of 70 per cent from the previous quarter.

This comes after a period of continuous investment in technology, integrating sales across the online and offline platforms and increased growth in global markets especially in India.

Last week, the company’s founder announced a new goal and wants to sell 100 million smartphones in 2018.

Xiaomi, Jio top India market

New Delhi, April 24: Xiaomi continued to lead the Indian smartphone market with 31.1 percent market share while Reliance Jio topped the feature phone market with a massive 35.8 percent share in the first quarter of 2018, a new report has said.

Xiaomi was the leader with 25 per cent market share in Q4 of 2017.

According to Counterpoint’s “Market Monitor” service, Samsung with 26.2 per cent share was second, followed by Vivo at 5.8 per cent share in the smartphone segment.

Driven by the feature phone segment which doubled owing to strong shipments of Reliance JioPhone, India’s overall mobile phone shipments grew 48 per cent (YoY) in Q1 2018.

Honor (Huawei) entered top five smartphone brands for the first time. Honor (146 per cent), Xiaomi (134 per cent) and OnePlus (112 per cent) were the fastest growing smartphone brands.

“Q1 2018 started off with some brands sitting on inventory post the festive season in Q4 2017, which continued throughout the quarter as industry moves to a Full View display portfolio,” Karn Chauhan, Research Analyst, said in a statement.

Furthermore, the quarter was also marked with less than normal smartphone launches as very few brands refreshed their portfolio, except for Xiaomi and Samsung which benefitted from the new launches.

“However, we expect the demand to start picking up from early Q2 2018 onwards, driven by faster replacement rate of existing 2G and 3G smartphone users upgrading to 4G mobile phones,” Chauhan added.

This is the first time that the top five smartphone brands accounted for more than 70 per cent market share in a single quarter.

“Xiaomi and Samsung alone captured 58 per cent of the total smartphone market. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 and 5 Pro were the most popular models for the Chinese brand, whereas Samsung Galaxy J7 NXT and J2 (2017) drove volumes for the Korean vendor,” said Anshika Jain, Research Analyst.

The performance of Chinese brands remained strong, accounting for 57 per cent of the total smartphone market in Q1 2018, up from 53 per cent during Q1 2017.

“The demand for JioPhone continued through Q1 2018 as Reliance Jio’s feature phone market share raced from 0 per cent last year to 36 per cent in Q1 2018. This demand was catalysed by the introduction of a cheaper data plan,” said Tarun Pathak, Associate Director.

China based Transsion Group (the holding group of Tecno, Itel and Infinix) has become the fifth largest player with four per cent market share in Q1 2018 (combined for all three brands).

The race for the fifth position is quite close between Lava, Micromax, Honor, Nokia (HMD) and Lenovo (+Moto) brands.

Itel is the third largest player in the feature phone segment with 17 per cent growth (YoY).

We don’t discriminate: Ola to VHP man who cancelled cab as driver was Muslim

New Delhi, April 23: Taxi aggregator Ola Cabs on Sunday gave a thoughtful reply to a man, claiming to be associated with a right-wing outfit, who had cancelled his ride after finding the driver assigned to him was a Muslim.

Abhishek Mishra, a man who claims to be linked to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), had posted on Twitter that he cancelled his Ola booking on Friday after finding that the cab driver was a Muslim.

His Twitter account says Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Ideology First, Hindutva Thinker, Digital & Social Media Advisor (Views Personal), said, “Cancelled @Olacabs Booking because Driver was Muslim. I don’t want to give my money to Jihadi People.”

After cancelling the cab, Mishra took a screenshot of the cancellation and tweeted his Ola booking which named the cab driver.

Mishra’s Twitter post soon went viral and triggered a huge debate on Twitter with some siding with him and while others trolling him for inciting hatred and communal sentiments.

Interestingly, Mishra is followed on Twitter by bigwigs like Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Culture Mahesh Sharma and many others; reported Zee News.

With his tweet creating a lot of buzz on the micro-blogging site, Ola also chipped in and tweeted a thoughtful reply to Mishra.

The cab operator put out a statement, saying that the company is a secular platform and doesn’t discriminate between its customers and driver partners and urged everyone not to discriminate on religious lines.

Mishra’s Facebook profile says he is from Ayodhya and works as an IT professional in Lucknow.

He claims he is an active member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal — both affiliates of the BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh — and “holds responsibility” of the IT cell of the VHP.

Apple loses $60bn over reports of weak smartphone demand in 2018

Taipei, April 21: Apple lost over $60 billion in market cap in two days after Taiwan Semiconductor, Apple’s biggest supplier, said in an earnings update that second-quarter revenues would be hit by “weak demand from the mobile sector”.

Apple shares fell nearly seven per cent on Thursday and Friday over reports of a sharper slowdown in smartphone sales this year, Financial Times reported late on Friday.

Not just Apple, the news led to several global chipmakers losing market valus, including Analogue Devices, Dialog Semiconductor, Qualcomm and Qorvo.

For the first time since 2009, smartphone sales in China fell last year while global sales fell in the fourth quarter of 2017 for the first time since 2004.

In another setback for the iPhone maker, its efforts to get LG Display’s OLED screens for future iPhone production line “have hit manufacturing issues”, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Apple is reportedly divided on whether LG will be able to succeed as Samsung’s replacement for OLED displays.

The Cupertino-based company currently uses Samsung’s OLED displays for iPhone X.

The LCD panels which are currently being used in the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are supplied by LG. Apple Watch screen is made by LG Display.

There are reports that Apple is designing and producing its own device screens, secretly at a facility near its headquarters in California.

It is believed that Apple will switch to OLED displays for all of its iPhone releasing in 2019.
