Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit, says Sushma Swaraj

Realizing that the Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide has become a national issue ,Union External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said that the University of Hyderabad PhD scholar Rohith Vemula was not a member of the dalit community but  from backward caste..

Sushma means that  if a backward caste person commits suicide than it should not be made an issue .

Swaraj said, “As per my complete  information the student (Rohith) was not Dalit. He was projected as a Dalit student by some people. The issue was highlighted and claiming that he was a Dalit was baseless.”

In a secret intelligence report forwarded to national security adviser Ajit Doval, agencies cited the statement of Rohith’s grandmother Raghavamma claiming that both her son (Rohith’s father V Mani Kumar) and daughter-in-law (Rohith’s mother V Radhika) belong to the Vaddera community, which is a backward caste and not dalit.

Rohith was one of the five Dalit scholars who was expelled by the University of Hyderabad in August 2015 for allegedly attacking a student activist belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The protest over the suicide of a Dalit research scholar in University of Hyderabad intensified as Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi  observed a day-long fast on Saturday by sitting alongwith  the agitators even as the BJP targeted him for “playing politics over dead bodies”.
