New delhi, 17 Sept: National Sports Awards are granted every year as a reward for excellence in sports and to honour one of the sports awards on friday sports minister Vijay Goel gave away Arjuna Awards to cricketers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane at a function held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium .
Both the cricketers were rewarded for their perfomance for the year 2015 and Ajinkya Rahane for 2016. Earlier, They both could not receive the arjuna awards by the president because they were participating in international tournaments.
Sports minister Vijay goel said on the occasion that “While there is no doubt that cricket is among the most popular games in India, the current government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to promote indigenous and other sports as well.The recent successes of athletes at the ongoing Rio Paralympics have made every Indian proud.”
The award is given to the one who performed excellence in their field of sports and was rewarded with Rs.5 lakh.
