Rewari girls end hunger strike after upgradation of school

Chandigarh, May 17, 2017: The girl students of Haryana’s Rewari, who were sitting on a hunger strike in support of their demand to upgrade their school to senior secondary level, on Wednesday ended the strike after their demands were accepted by the Haryana government.

The state government issued a notification informing about the upgradation of the Government High School Gothra Tappa Dahina (Rewati) to the level of Government Senior Secondary School from the 2017-2018 session.

According to reports, around 86 girl students, studying in class IX and X in Gothda Tappa Dahina village, had earlier gone on an indefinite strike, demanding upgradation of their school, fearing they will be harassed if they travel to a senior secondary school located in a different village for higher studies.

Among 13 students who are on hunger strike, 10 of them have been shifted to the hospital today.

“We fear harassment and molestation by youths of other villages and hence, we are demanding upgradation of our school up to Class XII,” one of the girls told media.
