Reporter flees Saudi Arabia amid ‘indecent dress’ probe

Riyadh, June 28 :Shireen al-Rifaie, Saudi Arabian reporter fled the Kingdom after her video of wearing a loose headscarf and a partly open gown that revealed her trousers and a blouse went viral with the Arabic hashtag “naked woman driving in Riyadh”.

The Saudi authorities have launched a probe against Shireen al-Rifaie for apparently violating the kingdom’s dress code for women and her video has sparked a torrent of criticism on social media.

Shireen al-Rifaie is a reporter with Dubai-based Al Aan TV.

Saudi Arabia’s media regulator has referred a television anchor for investigation over her “immodest” clothing .Rifaie was reporting on the lifting of the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia when her white abaya – a loose-fitting, full-length robe – was blown open by the wind to reveal white trousers and a white top below.

Women in Saudi has to follow the strict dress code, must wear an abaya and hijab – a traditional Muslim headscarf and the video has caused controversy in the ultra-conservative kingdom.
