Ravidas Temple Demolition

New Delhi, Aug 16 (IANS) The CPI-M on Friday urged the central government to rebuild the Guru Ravidas temple at the very site in the national capital where it was demolished.

CPI-M leader Brinda Karat made the appeal in a letter to Urban Development Minister Hardeep Puri, demanding that the temple should be constructed at the same spot and the ‘samadhis’ restored in their original place.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) demolished the temple and four ‘samadhis’ on August 10 alleging they were located in a “forest area” in Tughlaqabad Extension here.

Accusing the government of double standards, Karat said that on the one hand it spoke in the court in defence of the “faith of people” on Ayodhya but did not hesitate to bring down a Ravidas temple although it had stood at the spot for decades.

She said while demolishing the temple, the DDA — which reports to Puri — had permitted the building of a clubhouse in the same area. “Is this not double standards?”

The CPI-M leader pointed out that the Delhi High Court had suggested that the temple be relocated 400 yards away while keeping the samadhis intact. “However the DDA by its actions of demolition of the samadhis and the temple has changed the situation.

“I, therefore, request you to ensure that the temple is rebuilt and the samadhis are restored in their original place.”

New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) With just months away from assembly polls in Haryana, Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi appointed Madhusudan Mistry as chairman of the six-member screening committee in the state.

In an official release, party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal on Saturday said, “Sonia Gandhi has constituted the screening committee for Haryana with Mistry as it’s chairman.

She named senior party leader Deepa Dasmunshi and Devender Yadav as its members.

The committee also includes senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also the in-charge for Haryana.

The Congress, eyeing a comeback in the state in the assembly polls, formed the screening committee to decide the party’s candidates.

In 2014, the BJP improved its 2009 tally from 4 to 47, followed by the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) with 19 legislators and the Congress, which ruled the state won just 15 seats.

Two seats went to the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC), and one each to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Five Independents were also elected.

Sonia Gandhi, who had appointed former Union Minister and party general secretary Kumari Selja as state unit chief and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as chairman of the election committee on September 3, are also included in the committee.

Following the rift among the former state unit chief Ashok Tanwar and Hooda in the state, Sonia Gandhi has replaced former with Selja in the state.

Tanwar, considered close to former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and has had a running battle with Hooda since his appointment as state unit chief in 2014.

The UPA chairperson on September 10 constituted 28 member election committee for the state.

Chandigarh, Sep 14 : Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, who had resigned after losing the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat to actor-politician Sunny Deol of the BJP, will continue in his post, the Congress said on Saturday.

Taking note of the “good work” done by him as the state party chief, the Congress high command has rejected the resignation of Jakhar as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), an official statement said.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Punjab, Asha Kumari, asked Jakhar to continue in his post.

Welcoming the decision, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that it was in the interest of the party as Jakhar was a seasoned grassroots leader in the state, where he had done immense work on the ground besides building a strong party cadre.

Senior Congress leader Jakhar (65) — who was elected from Gurdaspur in the 2017 Lok Sabha bypolls held after the death of BJP lawmaker Vinod Khanna — had lost in this year’s general elections to Sunny Deol, who was contesting his maiden election, by over 80,000 votes.

“Everyone supported me fully and put in their best for me, but I was unable to defend my seat. In such a scenario, I cannot continue as the state chief. I feel a moral responsibility to quit,” Jakhar had written in his resignation letter.
