New Delhi, April 12: The word honorable prefixed before Unnao rape accused BJP MLA caused quite a kerfuffle during a media conference of the police on Thursday.
During a media briefing on the case in Lucknow, DGP OP Singh came under fire from the media after he referred to Sengar as ‘Honourable MLA’. The media persons present at the briefing were quick to point out the irony of the situation to the top cop and asked him how was Sengar “honourable”? Singh said, “His (Sengar’s) crimes have not been proven yet, and there is no reason why he shouldn’t be given respect of his position.”

Singh had been appointed as the new Director-General of Police of Uttar Pradesh by the Yogi Adityanath-led government in December 2017.
Singh further stated that -saying “honourable” does not mean that the police or the state government was protecting Sengar. The DGP said that no one is protecting Sengar. “We are just saying that we have to listen to both sides. The matter has now gone to the CBI. In such a case, the CBI will decide on the arrest of the MLA. Action will be taken and enough protection will be given to the victim and her family,”.
“Nobody is defending him, all we are saying is that we have to hear both sides. Now case has been given to CBI, they will decide on arrest,” Singh said.

Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar on Thursday announced that the Unnao rape case has been transferred to CBI.
Sengar is accused along with his two aides of raping a 17-year-old a year ago. He appeared before the police but refused to surrender on Wednesday saying he was there only to show he is not guilty and that he is not leaving Lucknow.
This comes after a SIT probe was initiated into the case following the custodial death of rape victim’s father.
The rape victim’s father Surendra Singh was arrested on Monday and later died of torture wounds while in police custody. A purported video of the alleged rape survivor’s father before his death also went viral and was shown by several TV channels, in which he alleged that he was mercilessly beaten up by the MLA’s brother and others, including with rifle butts.
On Tuesday, the MLA’s brother Atul Singh Sengar, along with three others, was arrested from Unnao who had been accused by the teenaged girl of gang rape and threats to her family.
The victim’s family had alleged that the accused MLA’s brother had thrashed the victim’s father on April 3 for refusing to withdraw the FIR over the rape.
On Sunday, the victim, along with her family members, had tried to commit suicide in front of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence in Lucknow, alleging that she was raped by Singh Sengar and his fellow accomplices and the police refused to take action against the MLA despite numerous complaints and applications.
I was raped. I have been going from pillar to post for one year but no one listened to me. I want all of them arrested otherwise I will kill myself. I had even gone to the CM to no result. When we lodged FIR we were threatened: Woman allegedly raped by BJP MLA pic.twitter.com/wgHrNz1Bmi

According to her, Kuldeep Singh Sengar allegedly gang-raped her last year. She said all her attempts to get justice bore no fruit as the legislator’s influence prevented police from booking him in the case, eventually leading her to the CM’s doorstep.
The accused BJP MLA on Monday refused to resign from his post following the allegations of rape against him. He further went on to dismiss the entire incident saying the allegations were completely wrong.
This incident has raised a lot of question on Uttar Pradesh’s law and order. A girl who was allegedly raped by a man last year, earlier made all attempts to get justice bore no fruit as the legislator’s influence prevented police from booking him in the case, just because he was a BJP MLA?
Rape victim cries for justice from 1 year, shows lawlessness in Yogi Raj. Despite taking action against the rape accused MLA, police took Surendra Singh, father of the victim in charge who later died in police custody. Is this your law and order?
On one side our Prime Minister talks about various moves like Women Empowerment and Beti Bachao…Beti Padhao and another side in his Raj his own leader is not only raping the girl but also walking freely. This has raised a big question mark on not only the safety of ‘Beti’ of our country but also his father.
