In what could be seen as a huge embarrassment for Modi government, When Home minister Rajnath Singh, addressing his first election meeting in Purnia in Bihar, asked the crowd whether they received benefits of two-month-old ‘kisan samman nidhi yojana’or PM-KISAN scheme, the crowd replied “No”.
Rajnath Singh started his speech by counting the achievements of the Modi government and welfare schemes launched by it in the last five years. First, he mentioned the Aayushman Bharat scheme. Then he went on to claim over eight crore people have benefited from the government’s Mudra scheme but when mentioned the two-month-old PM-KISAN scheme of the BJP-led Central government and asked whether they have received Rs 2,000 in their bank accounts.
Trying to get a positive answer, the minister repeated his question “have you all received Rs. 2000 or not”: the crowd remained silence. Perplexed, he repeated the question.
As several people shouted “No”, he was taken aback.
Then he suggested that those who received the money should raise their hand. But there was no show of hands. “No, no we haven’t received it”, “No one here got any”. people shouted from all sides.
The Modi government had announced the PM Kissan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme under which farmers owning less than 2 hectares of land were to be given Rs 6,000 a year. The first installment of Rs 2,000, as per the govt’s plans, would be distributed before the elections.
Rajnath Singh then turned towards the BJP and JD(U) leaders present on the stage and sought an answer.
