Chennai, Sep 13, 2016: One of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, AG Perarivalan, has been attacked inside the high-security Vellore central prison by a fellow mate on Tuesday.
According to media, Perarivalan was treated at the prison hospital and received four stitches on his forehead. The report states that Rajesh Khanna, had a tiff with Perarivalan which came to blows, resulting in Perarivalan receiving injuries on his forehead and hands.
Media quoted a senior official of the prisons department as saying that inquiries are being carried out as the two prisoners are lodged in separate blocks. “While Perarivalan is lodged in the high security-1 block, Rajesh is in the high security-2 block,” the official was quoted as saying.
Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a suicide bomber near Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991. Seven persons– Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, Nalini, Robert Payas, Jayakumar and Ravichandran, were convicted in the case.
Perarivalan has been serving a sentence of life imprisonment for more than 25 years in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
