Rahul Gandhi visits flood-hit areas in Assam, promises victims to raise the issue in Parliament

New Delhi, Aug 3 : Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited flood-affected areas of Assam, met the victims and promised to the issue  raise in Parliament.

Speaking to the victims, he said i thought of meeting you all so came here to see how much loss has been taken place and assist (Maine socha ki aap sab ke beech aakar dekhun ki kya nuksaan hua aur madad karun. Hum flood ka mudda Parliament mein uthayenge), news agency ANI reported.

Rahul further stated its your right to get compensation and if needed Congress will fight for you all on your behalf (Apka hak banta hai, apko compensation milna chahiye, aapki ladai hum ladenge).

His visit comes a days after when Prime Minister Narendra Modi went there.

Modi announced Rs 2,000 crore for the northeastern states to deal with havoc caused by floods that have killed 76 persons in Assam and affected millions.

Gandhi will go to Jalore in Rajasthan and Dhanera in Gujarat on Friday.

Quake jolts Himachal

The epicentre of the quake was Chamba region, bordering Jammu and Kashmir.

Shimla, June 23 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh was again jolted by a low intensity earthquake on Saturday, the third within a fortnight, an official said. There were, however, no reports of damage.

The earthquake measuring three on the Richter scale was recorded at 2.37 a.m., the meteorological office told IANS.

The epicentre of the quake was Chamba region, bordering Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, the epicentres of the quakes were Shimla and Chamba regions and occurred on June 17 and June 14, respectively.

Tourists raise over $11,000 for Guatemala volcano victims

Guatemala City, June 16: Tourists from a Japanese cruise ship that docked in Guatemala this week have raised more than $11,000 for those affected by the eruption of the Fuego volcano in the Central American country.

The ship, Asuka II, arrived in Puerto Quetzal on the country’s Pacific coast on June 11 and at the initiative of the crew and the passengers, the funds were raised, reports Efe news.

The passengers and crew made a gesture of “fraternity and solidarity” with the people of Guatemala in the face of the tragedy and natural disaster caused by the eruption of the volcano, the Japanese embassy here said in a statement on Friday.

The Fuego volcano suffered its biggest eruption in recent years on June 3, leaving 110 dead and almost 200 missing, in addition to causing significant material damage.

On Friday, the volcano produced seven explosions per hour and small pyroclastic flows.

Guatemala’s National Institute for Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology said that the volcano, located some 50 km west of the capital, has been producing between five and seven moderate explosions per hour and has belched out ash clouds rising 4,700 metres into the air.
