New Delhi: Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi is set to appear in a Surat court today in connection with a defamation suit filed against him for controversial utterings at a public rally where he had asked the audience, “Why are all Modis thieves?”

It will be Rahul’s second appearance in the hearing after October 2019. After Gandhi’s controversial statement, Surat West MLA Purnesh Modi had filed a defamation suit against him. Ahead of Gandhi’s visit, top Gujarat Congress Pradesh Committee leaders arrived in Surat on Wednesday and held a meeting with local party workers and leaders.

On Thursday, Rahul is expected to give his statement in the Chief Judicial Court to justify his utterings made during a public rally. During the rally, while directly alluding to Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, Gandhi had targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and labelled all Modi-surname individuals as “corrupt scamsters”. In the suit he filed, MLA Purnesh Modi had termed Gandhi’s statement an insult of the entire Modi community. PM Narendra Modi also belongs to the same community.
