Rahul Gandhi released now; ex-jawan’s kin, Sisodia detained too

New Delhi, Nov 2, 2016: Delhi Police released Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi after he was detained for almost 70 minutes while trying to meet the kin of Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal who committed suicide late yesterday over the delay in implementation of OROP.

The Delhi police had detained Rahul Gandhi and Delhi’s deputy CM Manish Sisodia on their way to meet ex serviceman’s kin at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Police closed the gates of the hospital when Gandhi went to meet the kin of Ram Kishan Grewal.

At Mandir Marg Police station, Gandhi asked the officer if the police did not feel ashamed to detain Grewal’s family. The family alleged mistreatment by police at the hospital before being brought to the same police station.

“If you can arrest a veteran’s family, arrest me also,” Gandhi said. “How can you arrest a veteran’s kin?”

At a later stage, Gandhi told the officer to “at least let the veteran’s family go”.

After not being allowed to meet the ex-soldier family an upset Gandhi told the media at RML hospital:

“It is an undemocratic mentality. A new kind of India is being created. It is Modiji’s India.”

Gandhi also added “I was not allowed to visit Grewal’s kin because of government’s non-democratic mentality…OROP Must be implemented in a meaningful way to satisfy our ex-servicemen.”

Delhi’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) chief Mukesh Kumar Meena informed media: Rahul Gandhi has been detained at Mandir Marg Police Station for ‘disruption of duty’ after he wasn’t allowed to enter RML hospital to meet ex-serviceman Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal’s family.

“No politician is allowed in the hospital and they were causing disturbances. Democracy doesn’t mean creating the obstruction. Leaders must also understand that hospital is not the place to hold any demonstrations,” Meena said.

Meena added that “Family members of Grewal were detained as well as they were contacting political leaders and holding the demonstration here.”

Manish Sisodia quashed the ACB’s statement and questioned how could politicians meeting the deceased soldier’s family be wrong and what is the purpose of detaining Soldier’s family.

Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief Minister also criticised the move and tweeted:

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said, Rahul Gandhi had gone alone to meet the family of the ex-serviceman and there was no violation of any law…it is illegal detention.

He also said that police used force against family members who were dragged on the ground and beaten up. Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and Kiran Choudhary were also detained by Delhi police.

On late Tuesday night ex serviceman Grewal, who was demanding implementation of OROP committed suicide to draw attention of centre towards the condition of army men. Recently PM Modi had said only his government could serve army men’s OROP demands. However with Grewal’s suicide several questions arise for the central government.

But the center run Modi government seems to be high on testing the patience of nation as those detained also included ex Jawan’s kins. The statement by Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) chief Mukesh Kumar Meena is baffling too as he even accused the family of ex serviceman for contacting politicians and obstructicing law and order.
