Wayanad, June 9 : It was a special moment when Congress president Rahul Gandhi Sunday met Rajamma Vavathil, a retired nurse who was present at the time of his birth.
The Gandhi scion hugged her and held her hand when Vavathil and her family came to meet him at a guest house here in the morning, on the last day of his three-day visit to Wayanad.
Vavathil was on duty at Delhi’s Holy Family Hospital on June 19, 1970, when Rahul was born. After taking VRS from service, she returned to Kerala in 1987 and is now settled in Kalloor near Sulthan Bathery.
Rajamma told Gandhi it was neither Rajiv Gandhi nor Sonia Gandhi, but she who first cuddled him. Hearing this Gandhi hugged her again.
When questions were raised by BJP about Rahul’s citizenship during 2019 lok sabha polls, she had said that Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi had waited outside the labour room when Sonia Gandhi was taken into the labour room.
Rajamma met Gandhi earlier on Sunday at the place where the Congress President had put up for the night in Wayanad. The moment was captured and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala posted the picture on Facebook.
Chennithala is accompanying Gandhi in his constituency on the roadshows which entered the third day on Sunday.
Rajamma had expressed her desire to various Congress leaders that she would like to meet him, that became a reality on Sunday.
“I was first among the few who took the newborn baby in my hands. He was so cute. I was witness to his birth. I was thrilled… we all were thrilled to see the grandson of prime minister Indira Gandhi,” Vavathil said.
Meanwhile on Saturday, while addressing a victory rally in Kalpetta of Wayanad, Gandhi had attacked PM Modi saying that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi uses poison of hatred to divide this country and lies to win the election.
“At the national level, we’re fighting poison. Mr Narendra Modi uses poison, I’m using a strong word but Mr Narendra Modi uses poison of hatred to divide this country. He uses anger and hatred to divide the people of this country. He uses lies to win the election,”Rahul had stated.
